My name is Robert Nelson and I am from Wellington originally. I have recently returned to New Zealand after having spent most of my life overseas, and am married with children. My journey working in the mental health field began 12 years ago. Prior to that, I have enjoyed separate careers in both music and sales. My approach in counselling is person-centered, meaning that therapy is based around what the client discusses in session, and that focuses and goals for personal growth arise organically from these discussions. I firmly believe there is hope in most all difficult situations, and that positive change is within each individual’s power. I am a trained depth psychological therapist, which means that I will often use myth, legend, and archetypes as a way to understand what clients may be experiencing, and to help us identify the personal journey of the client by studying the markers of where they have been, where they are, and to help imagine how their lives can be different. I also utilize acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral and motivational interviewing in session, and provide my clients with psychoeducation to help them develop useful tools to address their problems. I have worked with substance use disordered individuals, individuals with dual diagnosis concerns, bi-polar and major depressive disorders, life transitions, self-esteem, suicidality, anxiety, personality disorders, trauma and grief. I look forward to meeting you where you are at, and getting to know how best to deal with your concerns in a non-judgmental, safe and supportive therapeutic space.
