Biography

"You’ve been trying to win the war with your mind, with your anxiety, with your urges, your thoughts. True? Well, ACT is about letting the war roll on while you leave the battlefield." – Steven C. Hayes Kia ora, my name is Alex, and I have worked with young people and adults in the education sector for over 25 years as a teacher, manager, coach and counsellor in both the UK and Aotearoa, NZ. With a Master of Counselling (First Class Hons) and member registered with NZAC (New Zealand Association of Counsellors), I work as a counsellor & coach, with an eclectic kete of modalities to support you in a way that works best for you. I am genuine, non-judgmental, empathic, down-to-earth and very approachable. I have worked extensively with young people in schools as well as supporting adults and whānau (see below for areas of specialism) and continue to work part-time as a counsellor in schools, whilst also counselling adults and young people in private practice. I am a great believer in both short-term progress that can be made via EAP counselling and particularly working as an ACT practitioner (Acceptance Commitment Therapy), alongside the longer therapeutic relationship work that stems from my foundational training as a person-centred counsellor. My clients describe feeling heard, valued and accepted without judgment, and leave with clarity around next steps and skills/resources to practice on their journey to living well. I offer counselling in Howick and Bucklands Beach, as well as online.
